Hi, I’m Mércia, a designer based in New York City.
I am pursuing a Master’s degree in Transdisciplinary Design at Parsons The New School because I believe that design should transcend traditional boundaries and address complex global issues through integrated and collaborative approaches.
My academic journey has been marked by a passion for social transformation and innovation. I’ve had the opportunity to organize and facilitate design workshops for marginalized communities, such as waste pickers and at-risk youth, helping to foster agency and social inclusion. Alongside these projects, I’ve managed tasks like documenting workshops through photography and videography, creating content for social media, planning and executing a book launch, and redesigning websites. Recently, I took on a new creative challenge and won first place in a public voting contest for designing a bedding pattern, which led to a one-year contract with Bedsure Home.
My current research explores how we design for collective participation in urban environments, with a focus on New York City. Through documentation activities and interactive mapping, I investigate how small, everyday actions build into meaningful civic engagement. My goal is to create more accessible ways for communities to shape their shared spaces, fostering inclusive approaches to urban governance that acknowledge both individual agency and collective power.
I’m absolutely obsessed with collages! It’s my favorite way to take all those scattered ideas and turn them into something that’s visually pleasing and a bit quirky. If my mind were a room, collages would be the eclectic art gallery that makes sense of all the random bits and pieces lying around.
Pies, ¿para qué los quiero si tengo alas para volar?
Frida Kahlo
I really enjoy being alive and embracing the spontaneous side of things. So, I’m always up to random adventures and new experiences. Whether it’s trying out a new hobby or exploring uncharted territories. After all, who wants to stay grounded when you can be exploring new heights through the sky?
