Flourish

Flourish is a floral arrangement preview app that allows users to create their own floral arrangements and send them to a nearby florist. It also offers a variety of pre-made floral arrangements from local florists for quick purchases. It caters to individuals who use floral arrangements as gifts or for decoration.

Developed as part of the Google UX Design Specialization course, this project showcases my approach to user-centered design and problem-solving.

Research & Insights

I conducted surveys and created personas to understand the users I’m designing for and their needs. A primary user group identified through research was working adults who don’t know how to make floral arrangements on their own.

This user group confirmed initial assumptions about Flourish’s users, but research also revealed that unfamiliarity was not the only factor limiting users from making their own floral arrangements. Other user problems included prices, flower availability, and challenges related to visiting florists in person.

Other research processes involved defining a user journey map, creating storyboards (big picture and close-up), and utilizing the Crazy Eights tool.

Key Pain Points Addressed
  1. Unfamiliarity:
Working adults who don’t know how to make floral arrangements on their own.
  2. Flower Availability:
Planning floral arrangements with flowers unavailable at nearby florists..
  3. Price:
People afraid of making unattractive floral arrangements and wasting money on them.

Design Development

Paper Wireframes:
Drafting iterations of each screen on paper ensured that the elements included in digital wireframes would address user pain points. For the “create your own” screen, I prioritized a quick and easy process to help users create their own arrangements.

Low-Fidelity Prototype:

The low-fidelity prototype connected the primary user flow of creating and ordering a floral arrangement, which was then used in a usability study.

Usability Study

An unmoderated usability study with five participants provided valuable insights, leading to the addition of filtering options and a ‘see result’ button for a more intuitive floral arrangement process. These enhancements were integrated into the high-fidelity prototype, ensuring a seamless experience across various devices.

  1. Efficiency:
People want to create and order floral arrangements quickly.

  2. Guidance:
People want a helpful and intuitive navigation system.

  3. Convenience:
People want to filter florists by price.

Outcomes & Learnings

The final design received positive feedback for its intuitive navigation and effective visual hierarchy. This project highlighted the value of user research and iterative design in developing impactful digital solutions.

However, I recognized the need for a more holistic approach that includes communication with florists, flower vendors, and industry professionals. Engaging with these stakeholders would ensure that the app not only serves users looking to create and order floral arrangements but also addresses the practical considerations and constraints of those supplying the flowers. Balancing user experience with the operational aspects of flower vendors is essential for creating a comprehensive and effective floral arrangement platform. Future steps involve conducting further usability studies and collaborating with these key stakeholders to refine and enhance Flourish.
